Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

The game is set between Borderlands 1 and 2 (which means you need to have played through at least one of those games first). A group of four Vault Hunters are fighting Handsome Jack on Pandora’s moon Elpis, while he’s trying to get the H-E-double hockey sticks on with his erstwhile love interest – a psychic AI. You are helping Jack get back at Athena, or rather that android who looks suspiciously like her does it for you.

The game is 3rd person shooter but more importantly is also an RPG. There’s a new oxygen system in the game. This means you cannot go outside or under water without wearing an oxygen mask or die. And don’t think your base abilities are enough to protect you against the coldness of space either, because there are also freezing attacks that slow down your movement and cause damage over time if you’re not careful.

You also need to seek out Oxygen Canisters in order to replenish your supply when you’re outside, or if you feel like playing the game in hard mode (which is at least recommended for the first playthrough), you can turn this off.

The level cap is raised to 60, and your character can be one of four different classes:

– The Commando builds up Omgyium with his Action Skill, shoots two turrets that deal damage in an area around enemies they see. He also has the ability to throw down an ammo box for his turret, making it more effective.

– The Gladiator builds up rage when she deals damage with her Action Skill, which means stronger heavy attacks. She uses the Kinetic Aspis, a shield that can reflect projectiles and melee attacks in order to protect herself or others. – The Hunter shoots his assault rifle every time he jumps, while also throwing grenades in an arc when using his action skill. He has a pet, which can be either a spider or a bird and also lays down traps that deal damage to enemies in the area. – The last one is my personal favorite: The Siren manipulates Action Skill maelstroms that draw enemies closer together if they’re near it when she activates her Action skill.

What to expect from the game:

A new, fun and entertaining setting. A good balance between the gameplay elements we love from Borderlands 2 but with a fresh twist added to it. Co-op is even more fun than it already was in the previous games. Worth playing if you’re a Borderlands fan or enjoy playing co-op shooters with friends. Also worth mentioning is that the game doesn’t require you to play through Borderlands 1 and 2 first to understand what’s going on, but why would anyone want to miss out on playing those games?

How it differs from other games in the series:

The game is more focused on co-op than the previous games, with each character having its own abilities that especially shine when played together. There’s also a new oxygen element to the game that makes you think about how you play and what you do outside of combat, as well as adds an element of challenge for those who decide to play in hard mode (which is at least recommended for the first playthrough).

The storyline and setting

While it is an entertaining game to play with friends, one can’t help but feel like there’s something missing. Perhaps it’s the lack of character development or maybe how short the main storyline is (by Borderlands standards), but it has fewer laughs than the previous games in the series.
