Breaking Dirt Walls On Terraria

The first build of Terraria on the Wii U has recently become available. It allows for usage of the Gamepad screen only (no TV display) and is limited to 5 players. However, it’s still an interesting opportunity to experience this game which many have hailed as a 2D exploration based Minecraft-style game with Metroidvania elements.

I’d suggest everyone to download it and try it out for yourself! It’s free, so what do you have to lose? I’ll post my thoughts on the game, in particular in reference to multiplayer in a future article. For now though, let’s look at some things that you can do when using Terraria on the Wii U and how it differs from the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Our goal is to allow multplayer, but we don’t want to go into spoiler territory just yet!

Terraria how to destroy walls

You can easily see what to do by looking at the Gamepad screen while playing. Locate a wall to break and just go ahead and dig it out. This will be your starting point for breaking other walls you find in future!

The maximum number of players is currently 5. You’ll need to rely on local Wi-Fi connection to play with friends if they’re not physically present. Keep in mind that there’s no Pause function as well, so don’t just start smashing those walls without thinking first! If you forgot beforehand where a wall was or got lost due to a sudden blackout, never fear! You can easily teleport back to your home by pausing and going into World Map.

Terraria multiplayer

If you want to dig straight down from your starting point at the beginning, be aware that it will take some time. In my playthrough I went below the y=80 mark before I ran into a large cavern. So, if you want to dig straight down and find treasure too, I suggest doing so only after having reached the Cavern layer (around y=70).

It’s recommended that before starting your first playthrough, you should craft some Pickaxes for each character as early as possible! This will help immensely in clearing those walls and digging into the ground. Having some torches and ropes around will also aid you greatly by marking your paths underground and allowing you to return safely.

What you’ll need to know

  • There is NO pause function. Be careful!
  • It’s best to start at y=4 (the surface) and dig down through the caverns rather than starting underground below y=70.
  • The maximum number of players is 5, but it might be worth testing your luck by making a 6 player game or a 4 player game in a large world to see how it works.
  • A Pro Controller is required, so you won’t be able to play this with the Gamepad only.
  • Currently there’s no PVP mode and no NPCs either, but there will be more content available in future updates!

Digging the dirt out is only the beginning!

Many players were wondering what to do with their hard earned dirt. Don’t worry, there’s more than just one purpose for all that dirt. You can use it to craft some walls and other items in your house! Oh yes, we’ll definitely be bringing multplayer in a future update and then you’ll be able to build some houses as well.
