Sony Working on a Game Pass Competitor For PS5

Sony is working on a game pass competitor for its upcoming PS5 console. The company has plans to release the service in 2020, which will give gamers access to hundreds of games without having to purchase them outright. Game Pass could be an alternative way for developers and publishers looking for new revenue streams after the rising costs of AAA projects have been so difficult that companies like Activision Blizzard are considering selling cheap games with loot boxes instead of full titles.,

Sony is working on a competitor for the PlayStation 5. The company has been in talks with other companies to create a game pass service to rival Xbox Game Pass.

PlayStation Game Pass

Whatever else you may think about Xbox and Microsoft, their Game Pass membership is a decent one. It was only a matter of time until Sony decided to join the bandwagon as well. I’ll confess that I didn’t believe Game Pass would be a long-term success at first. I was concerned that the number of titles would be insufficient, or that they would come and go too rapidly owing to licensing restrictions.

So far, none of those things seem to be true, and I’d gladly accept a comparable service on PlayStation. According to a recent Bloomberg story, Sony plans to release something similar in 2022. Let’s have a look at the rumors and see what they have to say!

‘Spartacus’ is the codename for PlayStation’s response to Game Pass.

“Spartacus” is the internal name for Sony’s Game Pass rival plans, although the premise is quite similar. According to Bloomberg, the service will be available in three categories, with a probable debut date of spring 2022.

  • A PlayStation Plus membership in the traditional sense
  • Subscribers may download and play a selection of PS4 and PS5 games.
  • Extended demonstrations, game streaming, and backwards compatibility make up the third tier.

To compete with Microsoft, Sony would have to maintain the top tier’s price at $15 per month to match a Game Pass Ultimate subscription. I also hope that, unlike Microsoft, they continue to provide a 1-year membership rather than the 3-months offered by Xbox (I realize they stack, but I’d rather one payment).

‘Backwards compatibility,’ did you say?

Did you see that one? Yes, a library of backwards compatible titles might be included on the third layer. According to Bloomberg, this might include titles for the PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Portable. With the opportunity to play hundreds of older games going back to the first Xbox on your Series X, Microsoft has Sony beat in this area.

It would be a tremendous win for Sony if they could bridge this gap and provide access to older games. It would also go a long way toward game preservation, which many people think is crucial to gaming’s history.

I’m not sure whether these games would have upgraded features like the Xbox games, but it would surely assist. For example, on Xbox Series X, an older game like the original Max Payne gets upscaled to 4K, and let me tell you, it’s a lot easier to stomach the old visuals when they’re that sharp.

One thing I didn’t like about PlayStation Now was that older games were still being played at their original resolutions, which made them seem muddy and fuzzy on a contemporary screen. It would be fantastic to be able to play vintage titles at contemporary resolutions as well.

Show Me The Secrets

Another significant advantage of Game Pass is that first-party titles are always accessible to customers from the start. This is how consumers can enjoy games like Halo Infinite, which was just launched, without having to spend $60 for the campaign.

Unfortunately, this will not be the case with the future Spartacus service, at least according to speculations. This new service is touted to be better than PlayStation Now, but it won’t give God of War Ragnarok or Horizon: Forbidden West to users right once.

What are your thoughts on the rumor? Would you pay for a PS5 Game Pass subscription? Let us know what you think in the comments!
